Music Ministry
Music
at St. Francis enhances worship, provides fellowship opportunities,
and aspires to encourage a high standard of personal accomplishment
and musical growth. Both choirs perform a variety of music, from the
Middle Ages to the present. The choirs participate in church services
from September through June.
The
Choir
St.
Francis Choir, under the direction of Dr.
Ray Urwin, performs an eclectic variety of traditional choral music
from the last eight centuries, all chosen for its excellence and appropriateness.
The main church’s unusually resonant acoustic is particularly
suitable for the enjoyment of choral and organ music. The Choir is especially
proficient at the rare art of Anglican Chant.
Membership in the St. Francis Choir is a joyful and fulfilling musical
experience. The Choir performs music by classical composers such as
Bach, Di Lasso, Gibbons, Josquin, Schutz, Schubert, Stanford and Howells,
as well as works by modern composers such as Proulx, Chilcott, Willcocks,
Schelat. A short period of instruction in singing and vocal production
is included in rehearsals, and continuing education in musicianship
in an atmosphere of supportive, and convivial fellowship is a hallmark
of Dr. Urwin's ministry.
If you are interested in joining the Choir, please contact Dr. Urwin
by telephoning the church office (310) 375-4617, or send an e-mail to

St. Francis Choristers
The St. Francis Choristers, under the direction of Dr. Urwin and Mrs. Cecilia R. Urwin,
is dedicating to providing an outstanding musical experience for youth
of the parish.
No musical experience is necessary to join! Dr. and Mrs. Urwin provide
a comfortable, fun, and dynamic environment for singing and learning
music, using the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) program.
Choristers work at their own speed through the program, earning individual
recognition on a regular basis using an established set of goals. The
curriculum includes instruction in music reading, vocal production,
music history, and the role of music in the liturgy, all at age-appropriate
levels. Our rehearsals have a lot of singing and laughter!
Watch for recognition medals on colored ribbons on our Choristers! Several have now passed their target evaluations,
and will be proudly wearing RSCM ribbons and medals with their vestments.
Interested? Come be our guest at a weekly rehearsal! Please send an
e-mail to stfrancischoirs@yahoo.com to make an appointment.
The St. Francis Choristers is open to new members. The
choir accepts children ages 8 and up who are fluent readers
and who are willing to make the commitment (September through June):
~ Weekly rehearsals, for approximately one and a half hours.
~ Sunday 10 am services, usually six to eight times a year.
~ Christmas Pageant, Easter service, outreach, and other occasional
events.
A
Prayer for Choristers
Bless, O Lord, us Thy servants,
who minister in Thy temple.
Grant that what we sing with our lips,
we may believe in our hearts,
and what we believe in our hearts,
we may show forth in our lives.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
